5 Natural Ways to Manage Insomnia

Nutrients and herbs, combined with lifestyle changes, can help you manage chronic insomnia.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling or staying asleep, or non-restorative sleep. Insomnia that occurs most nights and lasts a month or more is considered chronic insomnia.

Do you suffer from chronic insomnia? We recommend assessing your hormone levels, specifically pregnenolone, DHEA, total estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and TSH. Next, work with your health care provider to replace deficient hormones, and use melatonin and other supplements that can calm your body and help restore dominance of the parasympathetic nervous system at night.

Melatonin is the hormone that regulates the bodys biological clock. As we age, our bodies produce less melatonin, which can lead to difficulty sleeping. Many people take supplemental melatonin at bedtime to help them fall asleep. The recommended dose of melatonin ranges from 0.3 to 6 mg, depending on individual needs.

Many herbs and nutrients may help manage insomnia, used either alone or in combination with prescription medications. They include:

  • SAMe
  • B vitamins
  • Inositol
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids
  • Magnesium
  • Kava
  • Essential Oils (Lavender and Lemon Balm)
  • Valerian
  • Chamomile

In addition to these herbs and nutrients, you can try to improve your sleep by:

  • Avoid stimulating drugs, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol late in the day. If you use medications that may be stimulating, take them long before bedtime.
  • Try not to take naps during the day.
  • Avoid eating a large meal in the evening.
  • Exercise regularly, but try not to exercise close to bedtime.
  • Reduce stress levels by listening to relaxation tapes, taking warm baths, and meditating.

Transformation Tuesday: How Sue’s Life Changed After DzLogic

It is sad to say, but lying on a pillow on the couch and in pain is where my family usually saw me. I put that pillow away and am now living my life.

I would love to tell you about my experiences with DzLogic. As a polio survivor I assumed my life would be one of pain, sleepless nights, and continuing weakness. I have a family history of diabetes, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, and joint replacements. I had been diagnosed with post-polio fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and chronic fatigue syndrome and my cholesterol was also high. The fatigue, muscle, and joint pain were severe. I also had had migraines for 38 years with them being daily for 23 years, and my immune system was non-existent. I had almost continuous infections for years.  

I am so glad that after hearing about DzLogic and learning about physiologic medicine that I made the choice to start the Program. It was one of the best decisions of my life. I heard about Dr. Dzugan, and after reading his books and scientific articles it made sense that there was a hormonal connection to migraine and other health issues. I started the Program, hoping to help the migraines, and I am amazed that all the other issues have been resolved as well. I was on antibiotics the year preceding starting DzLogic 11 times and have not had to take them since starting the Program 2.5 years ago! I have gone from 30 severe migraines a month to an occasional mild headache and went from 4 to 5 hours of fitful sleep to 8 to 9 hours of deep sleep each night. The fatigue and pain are gone. My outlook on life is great, my mind is sharp, and it is comforting to know that I have one of the foremost leaders in the world on my side, Dr. Dzugan.
